Update – Red Sea Crisis

Since mid-November the Houthi attacks have been having major effects on commercial shipping vessels that sail through the Suez Canal and Red Sea. As they have been attacking and hijacking the vessels this has had an impact on the 12% of global traffic and 30% of global container traffic that travels through the Red Sea.

Late November and early December, companies such as Maersk, CMA, CGM, MSC and Hapag-Lloyd stopped all shipping through the Canal. Some of the shipping lines have rerouted their vessels round the Cape of Good Hope and some have been parked up awaiting further instructions.

On Christmas eve, Danish shipping giant Maersk revealed they are going to resume shipping through the Suez Canal. This is just weeks after they halted all shipping through there due to the numerous attacks by the Houthi Rebels. They have decided to resume and use the US-led military operation to help protect vessels sailing through the area.
