Shipping white goods to Ghana
A ban on the shipping to Ghana of second-hand refrigerators is coming into force to reduce energy consumption and harm to the environment. The ban was first introduced in 2008; however, it was extended to give traders time to adjust. Ghana is now considered to be a pioneer in West Africa.
Some Ghanaian traders have criticised the ban, saying thousands of jobs will be lost. On the other hand, Energy commission head Alfred Ofosu-Ahenkora says the second-hand refrigerators are harming the country and that the solution to job lose would be to manufacture the fridges locally instead of importing them.
